About On Just Being
Purpose & Vision
I am creating On Just Being to encourage, explore and elucidate the quest for self-knowledge. As stated in my introductory essay, Onward Through The Storm, I understand the quest for self-knowledge – the Quest for short – to be “the journey to discover my authentic self, the center of my being, and to strive day-to-day to strengthen my connection to this inner core.”
I believe these momentous times both implore and empower us to more deeply know ourselves, and in so doing, open our hearts and minds to understanding the perspectives, needs and dreams of others. As we become more familiar with and grounded in our own core self, we more readily recognize, honor and connect to the corresponding core of our fellow human beings. This sensed correspondence happens naturally, because our fundamental nature is the same at its innermost essence, notwithstanding the limitless differences in how we individually manifest over the course of our lives. ‘Human knows human’ so to speak, and I believe the health of our shared future depends on reconnecting to this fundamental yet all-too-easily ignored sense of reciprocal knowing.
Hence the quest for self-knowledge, as I understand and experience it, is both an intrinsically personal and inescapably interpersonal journey. We each have personal agency within a complex web of interrelatedness. We might say we are inter-independent.
On Just Being will delve into the dynamics of both personal development and sociopolitical change, exploring the vital if not always obvious link between them. I will also offer specific ideas and commentary on how we can work together to foster a more healthy society. My initial focus, however, will be on what we can do as individuals, including in our personal relationships, as this is the realm where we have maximum agency and where our choices and actions have the most direct and immediate impact on ourselves and others.
The methodological goal of this work has always been to simplify the inherent complexities of life and growth into clear principles, skillful practices and effective tools that can help make actionable sense of the world within and around us.
Status & Plans
This nascent effort is an ongoing work-in-progress which could evolve in any number of ways, both within this website and beyond. A book, webinars, and/or a podcast may emerge from this project. To start, On Just Being will be a growing collection of short expository essays and personal life stories authored by me, with links to relevant works by others. My intention is to make each article a stand-alone piece while also weaving them into a coherent whole.
If you are contemplating or already engaged in this invaluable life pursuit, I invite you to share and discuss your experiences, questions and views. In time I will create participation vehicles such as:
- Classes/workshops on the quest for self-knowledge, both online and in person (I live in the San Francisco Bay Area)
- Online forums to discuss common questions and issues related to and emerging from the journey to discover and connect to our authentic core self
- Interviews with others about the quest to “know thyself” and its relevance to today’s uncertain world
I invite you to take a look around and read the essays in any order. To see my suggestions on how to use and read this website, check out Guide to On Just Being .
My personal background and process for creating this effort is addressed in Founder’s Note.
Your feedback is always welcome and encouraged via the comment sections.
