Onward Through The Storm
The only thing that will redeem mankind is co-operation, and the first step towards co-operation lies in the hearts of individuals.
– Bertrand Russell
In the spirit of the ancient Delphic maxim to “know thyself,” I have been consumed with the quest for self-knowledge my entire adult life. Exploring, simplifying and encouraging this time-honored pursuit – which for the sake of brevity I will at times simply call the Quest – is the mission On Just Being.
I understand the Quest to be:
the journey to discover my authentic self, the center of my being, and to strive day-to-day to strengthen my connection to this inner core.
In today’s tumultuous world the question might be asked: With the planet warming and the seas rising, democracy being assaulted by misguided patriots and social media algorithms alike, and billionaires taking joy rides into space while billions of their fellow humans endure unconscionable deprivation, has tending to one’s personal and spiritual development – which has always been the obsession of a relative handful in any case – become a vain and pointless endeavor? Akin to shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic?
Does an individual’s quest for self-knowledge still matter? Can it make a meaningful difference?
My answer is an unequivocal yes. Indeed, the Quest is more relevant today than it has ever been. One central reason is the vital link between personal development and social cohesion encapsulated in the Bertrand Russell quote above.
Whether you choose to be on the front lines in the fight for all that is self-evidently righteous and good – such as human kindness and decency; pluralistic society and democratic self-government; fact-based news, truthful education, and honest communication at every level – or you simply want to lead a good life and maintain sanity amidst the cacophony of events swirling around you, committing to the challenge of knowing your core self is the smartest, boldest, most rewarding endeavor you can undertake.
Taking up this challenge is what On Just Being is all about.
